There are so many “gritty crime dramas” on the internet that it might be challenging to distinguish between them. Viewers may leave a show if it doesn’t offer anything to pique their interest. Even with a lot of action and drama, generic law enforcement officers and generic criminals won’t do. A recent French crime thriller finds it difficult to develop its characters, despite the first episode featuring a lot of sunny coastal scenery, shooting, and running.

In Marseille, eight months later, a squad of police officers under the command of Lyès Benamar (Tewfik Jallab) are monitoring the headquarters of a well-known drug dealer who is now on probation. Benamar and Audrey Ilunga (Lani Sogoyou), his best team member, take down the lookout and the courier when a motorcycle arrives, but not before some gunfire erupts and a stray bullet hits someone. Benamar employs drastic measures to persuade the courier to reveal to him who arranged the transaction, but the man can only identify himself as “The Indian.”
Although Commissioner Fabiani (Florence Thomassin) does not agree with Benamar’s strategies, he is aware of their effectiveness. She gives him the obligatory lecture about shooting up a tourist attraction before informing him that he will be paired with Alice Vidal, an Interpol agent (Jeanne Goursaud). She meets Miranda (Diouc Koma), a colleague who was brought to Marseille to “clean up” the local police force, as she enters the station. He cautions her about being burned by the “unpleasant surprises” that the city and its police force have in store.
Vidal, whose father was slain at that burial, is in the city for private reasons, but she is searching for Murillo. Given that he was killed in Venezuela while evading capture, Murillo is believed to be dead. Vidal, nevertheless, feels certain that Murillo is still alive and well in Marseille.
Meanwhile, a turf war is beginning to erupt as “The Indian,” Tarek Hamidi (Moussa Maaskri), acting on behalf of Murillo, begins threatening the local drug lord Ali Saïdi’s cousin, Samir Boitard. After receiving a tip that something major is going to happen, Benamar is taken aback to see Vidal show up on a motorcycle and begin her own independent investigation before her first day on the task force.

Our Opinion: Blood Coast is facing two main problems: not only is the premise unclear, but neither the crooks nor the police make a particularly strong impression. The show reads less like a prestige series and more like an American network procedural, or perhaps a typical British crime drama. And if there was anything about any of the characters we cared about, it would be perfectly acceptable.
We understand that Benamar is violent; to get the courier to talk, he smashes his head through the car window, opens the door, and forces his head on the sidewalk while the vehicle is driving. He is a little dishonest; he embezzles the majority of the cash that was taken in the raid. Later on, both of those will be relevant. However, neither he nor Vidal, who will undoubtedly be the primary actors on the police side, appear to be anything other than violent, vengeful robots. Although there might eventually be a spark of attraction between the two, there is nothing about their personalities that compels us to support them.
Murillo appears to be an ordinary villain as well. Yes, he is surrounded by a violent and crafty group of people, but we still need to learn more about his past—particularly in light of his deceased son—in order to understand the reasons behind his harsh demeanor. The first episode’s developing turf war doesn’t completely work since the characters aren’t fully developed yet. We don’t know who is working for which “big bad” or why they are being threatened.
We didn’t even list the names of the Benamar and Vidal support staff because they are so generic. You might enjoy this show if you’re okay with a good deal of violence and chase scenes, but if you’re looking for a show with any sort of plot, you might not be satisfied.
